Inner Sanctum

was an anthology which aired between 1941 and 1952. It dealt mostly with murder mysteries, but occasionally ventured into the horror genre as well. Although it remains uncertain just how many episodes were made (some sources list over 500), there appear to be around 140 in circulation, all in half-hour format. A separate series of the same name was produced in Australia around 1942.

Raymond Edward Johnson played the host until 1945. The series was directed by Himan Brown [Flash Gordon, CBS Radio Mystery Theater, General Mills Radio Adventure Theater, and many more].

Sources used to create my own log and double-check titles, dates and cast members: "Existing Episodes of Inner Sanctum" (Martin Grams, Jr ), RadioGOLDINdex, Nightkey's OTR Errors, Radio Horror Hosts, and Terror on the Air!: Horror Radio in America, 1931-1952 (Richard J. Hand).

A brooding, psychological tale that seems boringly predictable—until the end, when it suddenly derails to the point of bathos. Contains spots of hammy, unconvincing acting. 6.5 out of 10. --- Jerry Underwood

On a dark and stormy night, a woman misses the last train home, but manages to catch a cab. Wouldn't be so bad, except the cab already has a passenger... one that doesn't look like he'll be paying for the ride.

With Joan Lorring and Leon Janney.

Reviews:
Joan Lorring is my all-time favourite radio actress; I can't get enough of her voice! In this episode she manages to project a quivering note of fear even when the script jumps from humorous to ridiculous. The interaction between Lorring (the woman) and Leon Janney (the cab driver) in the opening scene cracks me up every time I listen to it (I'm not sure the humour was intentional, though). The script then settles down to a series of improbable events and hysterical screaming that Inner Sanctum Mysteries does so well. The script isn't the best, but Lorring and Janney pull it through anyway. [8/10] --- zM

John Clay wakes, disoriented, with no idea of where he is or how he got there. He lies on a hard white bed, in a clean white room, with a dull pain in his abdomen. A nurse and doctor visit and comfort him and administer a pain killer. As he drifts off, he dreams of a dimly-lit, endless passage with closed doors on either side... doors with names on them.

With Boris Karloff.

Reviews:
The build-up was mysterious, engaging and suspenseful—Boris Karloff played his part perfectly—but the surprise ending was rushed and left me wondering what just happened. I had to listen a second time to sort out all the roles and make sense of the conclusion. Still, what you'll remember from this episode are the passages describing the Corridor of Doom... and that's worth listening to. [7/10] --- zM

Unbeknownst to him, the old man is playing with real human lives, and Mr Strand has just been cast as 'the white knight'. Will the queen take the rook? Who'll take the knight? And who will win the game? Good (white) or evil (black)?

With Raymond Massey. Another version was produced for Murder at Midnight.

Reviews:
Whether or not you enjoy this will depend upon your taste for the fantastical. I personally thought it absolutely absorbing. At each point, somebody dies, and at each point, another twist. Due to the nature of the plot, the characters are necessarily paper-thin. This is the only OTR episode that I've ever encountered in which the commercials are artfully worked into the plot. [9/10] --- Jerry Underwood

The Murder at Midnight version has a more complete script which fills in gaps in the story line and makes the ending more intelligible, but the acting is much better paced in the Inner Sanctum version (due to the shorter script). 10/10 for originality, but 6/10 because the metaphor breaks if examined too closely. Nevertheless, interesting and worth listening to. [7/10] --- zM

Hospital intern Carl Dickens stumbles into Captain Zeb's Tattoo Salon with a heavy wooden box under his arm and tells the most improbable story. He claims that Charon... the Charon... will be claiming his life in a few hours and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent it. Charon, for some reason, has a mynah bird that quotes Edgar Allan Poe and Arch Oboler.

With Mason Adams and Ted Osborne.

Reviews:
Similar to "Death of a Doll" (also written by Fred Maytho and starring Mason Adams), but with better acting and a better script. Even so, the story lacked 'zing' and petered out with a confusing and ambiguous ending. Was this a supernatural story or not? You decide. The mynah bird was a nice touch, though. [7/10] --- zM

Theodore (Ted) Zenga Lyon inherits the Highgate Estate. Located a few miles from the town of Hillcrest, the estate is known as the one-time home of Daniel Zenga, a man who, in turn, was known for his mastery of the dark arts. Daniel Zenga was put to death, but before he died he left one last prophecy...

Daniel Zenga Prophecy

In the fourth generation, a lion will come to the crest of the hill and reign over high gate...

He will first silence the waters...
Then capture the jewel from the king...
Thirdly, after seven days of want and darkness, he will fling a tarnished stone into the Earth...
and a flame in the sky will show him the four keys.

And the lion will sit with the ransom at his feet and the winds will seal him from the wrath of the world.

Mystery novelist Carola Winter—feeling wild and reckless... edgy... and eager for the thrill of danger—rents a secluded cabin along the storm-swept, rock-bound coast. On her first night in the cabin she can't sleep, so she restlessly paces the floor listening to the fierce wind and watching the surf. That's when she witnesses the scuffle between the two men... that's when she witnesses the murder.

[1946] With Betty Lou Gerson. [1950] With Charlotte Holland.

Reviews:
A well-written episode with multiple plot twists that will keep you guessing right up to the very end. It's told as a first-person narrative, reminiscent of the 'hard-boiled' school of crime fiction except that the narrator is the novelist rather than a detective. The result is a dark, yet fast-moving, tale full of excitement, mystery and intrigue. Charlotte Holland does a fine job in the 1950 version, but still can't come close to the brilliant performance of Betty Lou Gerson in the 1946 version. [8/10] --- zM

A travelling salesman picks up a hitchhiker, who causes him to wreck, killing her.

[1949] With Mason Adams. [1952] With Wendell Corey.

Reviews:
An old take on a familiar urban legend. Despite this, there were several moments where I really couldn't guess what was coming next. Is this man being haunted? Is he mad? Or is it all a terrible dream? The surprise ending ties the ends up quite nicely, and is quite plausible. [8/10] --- Jerry Underwood

Story by: Edgar Allan Poe

A Robert Newman adaptation of the Edgar Allan Poe classic. Simon has recently been cured of deafness, Oliver of blindness. They meet on the road outside of town and decide to live in an old, deserted mill for a while, until they become accustomed to their new station in life.

With Boris Karloff.

Reviews:
An original story, loosely inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale. A slow-moving, yet engaging tale which focuses on the back-story... the conditions which lead up to the fateful night that we all know so well. 10 out of 10 for originality and acting, but with subtractors for a weak plot. If you know and love Poe's classic you may be interested to hear Newman's interpretation. But if not, you may be left shaking your head. [7/10] --- zM

Story by: Emile C. Tepperman

A red-headed woman driving alone at night hears a radio announcement informing of a local prison breakout. Lee Hartley has escaped from the death cell with the aid of his red-headed wife. The pair may have split up, but they are both armed and extremely dangerous. Do not, we repeat, do NOT pick up any hitchhikers!

[1945] With Ann Shepherd. [1952] Agnes Moorehead.

Reviews:
Intense and scary in parts with a twist ending that was fairly predictable. Told mostly as a first-person narrative. The 1952 version with Agnes Moorehead is slightly better than the 1945 version with Ann Shepard. Moorehead manages to add a subtle sense of levity which is missing in the 1945 version. Tepperman's stories, like that of a good conman, often start slowly and believably. The main characters then have a spot of trouble... which leads to complications and more trouble, and before you know it everybody is in serious trouble. Sometimes they get out of it, sometimes they don't. This story is typical Tepperman. The woman driving alone at night has no intention of picking up a hitchhiker. None at all! Adders for a twisty plot; subtractors for a weak ending. [7/10] --- zM

A couple on their honeymoon witness a murder... and the murderer witnesses them! Thus begins a complicated game of cat-and-mouse with the murderer trying to frame the couple and the couple trying to escape!

[1945] With Ann Shepard and Larry Haines. [1947] With Everett Sloane and Mercedes McCambridge. [1952] With Mason Adams.

Reviews:
Improbable event follows improbable event in this suspenseful, action-packed story. The plot twists and turns and suggests many exciting possibilities, but eventually peters out with a weak ending. Tepperman seems to excel at plot twists, but endings are his weakest point. [6/10] --- zM

Diana tells her husband, Richard, about her dream: a green mist... the beating of wings... a pair of blood-red eyes, rimmed with green, glittering like glass... something flying around her head like a bat, but not a bat... soft fur on her neck... a terrible pain as her throat is pierced. She's convinced the dream was real; Richard is sure she is exaggerating.

Story by: Robert Sloane

Geraldine Reeves speaks with her family doctor about anxiety and fear. Every night at midnight she hears the sound someone playing her ex-husband's last piano composition. The sound comes from the ruins of her old house... the house which burned to the ground with her husband still inside! The doctor hears the music, too. They are both afraid; they are alone on the island... and then the phone wires are cut... and their car is missing... and the bridge is washed out...

With Lesley Woods.

Snippet: On a long narrow island just off the shore of one of our larger lakes, Mrs. Geraldine Reeves, widow of the late composer David Reeves, lives alone in a gaunt, grey-shingled house. Only a few hundred yards away are the charred remains of her former home, where David was burned to death in a fire just two years ago. It's after dinner now, and as the clock in the hall strikes eight.

Reviews:
This is a fast-moving tale packed with hysteria and energetic screaming. The production is so over-the-top with melodrama, cliché, and multiple plot shifts that it was actually quiet enjoyable! I found myself grinning at the absurdity of it all... then jumping as the next unexpected scream split the night... and then laughing at myself for getting caught up in the story, anyway. Lesley Woods does a fine job as the distraught widow. [8/10] --- zM
