The Sealed Book

was a short-run series derived from stories previously told in The Mysterious Traveler. Its sister show, The Strange Dr. Weird, derived its stories from MT's supernatural mysteries, while The Sealed Book favoured murder mysteries. But while Dr. Weird was condensed to 15-minute episodes, The Sealed Book retained a 30-minute format. Scripts were prepared by the writing team of Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan [Dark Destiny, The Mysterious Traveler, The Strange Dr. Weird, The Teller of Tales].

Snippet: "The strange story of a scientist who delved into the unknown, with frightening results. A tale titled 'Beware of Tomorrow'." --- the narrator

Reviews:
A workmanlike script, not brilliant and not terrible, that holds one's interest despite a slew of science fiction clichés lifted from well-pilfered sources like Frankenstein, R.U.R., et cetera. In fact, the cozy familiarity and lack of either pretension or condescension are among its chief virtues. --- Anonymous

Death Rings Down the Curtain

Year: 1945
Duration: 30 min
Genre:
Available for Listening Booth: Y
Story by: Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan

Rich old Aunt Martha's ne'er-do-well nephew and egomaniacal Broadway actress niece come to visit—and to dishonestly acquire her millions.

Snippet: "The strange story of a beautiful young actress who tried the most difficult role of her life when she impersonated Death to win a prize of millions of dollars. A tale titled 'Death Rings Down the Curtain'." --- the narrator

Reviews:
The surviving Mysterious Traveler episode is perfectly okay, but this condensed version of the script might be better: it strips away all nuance and detail to focus on the over-the-top characters of the aunt and the niece. The result is bone simple, but highly enjoyable melodramatic camp. Also, I was apparently so distracted by the actresses' work that I couldn't quite predict the final twist despite plenty of obvious hints. Acting! --- Anonymous

Design for Death

Year: 1945
Duration: 30 min
Genre: Murder
Available for Listening Booth: Y
Story by: Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan

Carl and Dora Evans are on the run from the police, heading for Canada, when their car slides into a gully deep in the Maine woods. Fortunately, they discover an isolated cabin. Unfortunately, the cabin is inhabited. Fortunately, the inhabitant, Mordred Vance, is a recluse who has no television or radio, no servants, doesn't read the newspapers and has no way of knowing that Carl and Dora are fugitives. Unfortunately, Mordred falls in love with Dora. Fortunately, Carl and Dora realize that if Mordred disappears, they are home free. Unfortunately, Mordred has a penchant for playing frenetic organ music at any time of day... and it's beginning to get on Dora's nerves.

Snippet: "The strange story of a web of death woven by fate that trapped three unsuspecting mortals in an evil design more terrible than the mind can conceive. A tale titled 'Design for Death'." --- the narrator

Reviews:
Many of the Sealed Book stories have a similar theme, mood, music, and style, and it's hard to remember which story is which (even the character names are similar). But you'll remember this story as 'the story with that weird organ music'. The plot is okay—had me guessing right up to the end and finished with a strong ending that I didn't see coming—and the acting is solid. [7/10] --- zM

Devil Island

Year: 1945
Duration: 30 min
Genre: Murder
Available for Listening Booth: Y
Story by: Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan

Shortly after Anne Drake moves to Devil Island to live with her father (Martin), step-mother (Hester), uncle (Henry), and their servant (Abel), strange things begin to happen. Anne worries that the strain of insanity that runs in her family is taking hold and she will shortly lose her mind. The rest of the family isn't helping...

Snippet: "The story of a small and desolate island off the coast of New England and the people who lived on it. The title of the tale is 'Devil Island'." --- the Keeper of the Book

Reviews:
A strong opening introduces Anne Drake as she approaches "Devil Island". She plans to live on the island with her father, whom she has never met, and she is anxious and nervous. An eerie, lonesome wind sets the mood. The mood settles down, but then ramps up again as Anne has unsettling experience after unsettling experience. The quick tempo is reminiscent of some of the best of Inner Sanctum Mysteries, like "Skeleton Bay", but the plot is not as tightly written and the tempo falters mid-stream. The result is a slightly better-than-average episode for the series, but I was left with the feeling that it could have been much better. [7/10] --- zM

Escape by Death

Year: 1945
Duration: 30 min
Genre: Murder
Available for Listening Booth: Y
Story by: Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan

Two invalid sisters (Martha and Louise Abbot) living with their niece (Hester) and nephew (Roger) become disgruntled with the isolated life in the country and make plans to move back to their former home in the city. But when one of their cats dies after eating a piece of meat and the other unexpectedly vanishes, the sisters begin to wonder if their niece and nephew will ever allow them to leave.

Another version previously aired on The Mysterious Traveler as "The House of Death".

Snippet: "The strange and terrible story of two old ladies and how they tried to escape from their doom. I call the story 'Escape by Death'." --- the Keeper of the Book

Reviews:
A decent story with a slightly predictable 'surprise' ending. Uses the same script as the Mysterious Traveler version, but has better acting and much better sound quality. The sisters are entirely believable as lovable, but suspicious, old ladies who struggle when their routine life is interrupted. [7/10] --- zM

Hands of Death, The

aka: "The Hand of Death"
Year: 1945
Duration: 30 min
Genre: Murder
Available for Listening Booth: Y
Story by: Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan

Wheelchair-bound Edward Morlock crosses paths with his brother, Cain, years after Edward has cheated Cain out of his inheritance. In the meantime, Cain has become a murderer... and Morlock has become a collector of murder weapons. Tempers run high and it is unclear who is going to murder whom.

Snippet: "A dark story of two brothers, one of them killed because he could not help himself. The other one was interested in murder, too, but in a very different way. The title of the tale is: 'The Hands of Death'." --- the Keeper of the Book

Reviews:
First episode of the series. Felt very much like The Mysterious Traveler..s. which shouldn't be a surprise as the much of the production staff for the two series was the same. Adequate acting, but the story just seemed weak and uninspired. I'm not a big fan of the writing team of Arthur/Kogan—many of their plots seem shallow and predictable. This one was par for the course. [5/10] --- zM

Genre: Murder
Available for Listening Booth: Y
Story by: Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan

Prospector Gimpy Gordon discovers a long-lost cavern containing Aztec treasure, and sells the resulting treasure map to a wealthy businessman named John Dayton. Dayton's wife, Laura, and her lover, Harvey, think a long vacation to explore the cavern will present the perfect opportunity to do away with John so they can inherit his estate and live happily ever-after.

Snippet: "The strange story of three people who ventured in to a long-lost cavern—a cavern cursed by the ancient Aztecs. A tale called 'I'll Die Laughing'." --- the narrator

Reviews:
A decent story with a fairly predictable twist ending that nevertheless worked, because although the ending was foreshadowed from the start, the details were unexpected and were backed by solid acting all around (though melodramatic in spots). The chronic laughing by the lead character was annoying at first, but by the end it had grown on me. Not bad. [7/10] --- zM
